1. Many poets and writers are daunted at the prospect of giving any kind of critical feedback to other writers. It's important to realize that even if you don't know perfect syntax or a certain poetry form, you DO have something useful to contribute. You as a reader bring a unique insight to other people's writing, and often all someone wants are general tips on what impressions you are left with when reading their poetry.
Please note that each thread in this board is labeled with what type of feedback the author is looking for. Perhaps you don't feel comfortable giving help, but you do have some thoughts on what sticks out on what works in a certain piece, or what doesn't. All we ask is that you tailor your feedback to what the author is looking for.
2. Be respectful - the idea of this board is that it is a place for writers to come together to offer helpful feedback NOT to tear down peoples work. If you cannot respect the merit of someone's poem, then please do not comment on that particular poem.
3. Give useful feedback, offer suggestions or observations, or even ask questions of the author if there's something you don't follow or understand. Poetry doesn't work if it doesn't communicate, and most writers want to know when we miss the mark. Please don't just say "It's horrible, start over" or "It's wonderful don't change a thing"; this is a place where we as a community can really help each other out.
4. Please review (e.g. give useful feedback for) at least one piece of poetry in this board by another writer for every poem that you post. Understand that this isn't to penalize you, it's so that the board becomes active in the same manner as the rest of the site, and to help you build trusting relationships with each other as writers so that we can all get past that initial discomfort and get right to the meat of improving our writing. Having to leave feedback for others isn't to penalise you it's to keep the board active and to encourage each other--and isn't that the reason you're posting in the Poetry Development board?
5. If you disagree with the feedback someone leaves you DO NOT turn the thread into a flame war - if you feel the feedback is too harsh or flaming please contact an admin. Remember, the purpose of posting in this board is to improve your writing. There will inevitably be times when you disagree with the feedback given. You don't have to incorporate this feedback into your writing, it is only a suggestion.
6. Never make your comments about the writer - keep it focused on the writing! Conversely, also remember that the comments others are leaving are not about you, they're about the poetry.
